Yesterday, the City of South Miami unveiled the public works of artist Alexander Mijares, releasing a series of murals that elevate Art in public spaces around the community.
Attendees gathered in the alley of the South Miami District Parking Garage for art, culture, music, and food. Before the lighting of the murals, each City Commissioner said a few words on how much effort the Art In Public Places committee put into this project alongside Mijares.
Alex brought his vision of signature-stained-glass Meninas, each embodying both grace and strength, and delivered, according to one spokesperson.
“This would be the first of many projects curating some of the public places in South Miami,” Mayor Javier Suarez said during his unveiling speech in front of one of the Meninas.
Even with Alex expecting a newborn, he thanked the City of South Miami and his mother for their continued support, saying, “I wanted to reveal a legacy and help the city grow, be involved in all the causes around the city, and after a meeting with this welcoming city, I was super excited about creating tall Meninas for the mural.”
The event was held by the Commissioners of South Miami, who were the program's advocates. Food and beverages were provided throughout the night by Cala Millor, and a live Spanish musical artist graced the stage after the murals were lit.
Hoping to elevate the citizens of South Miami through portrayals that mark a thriving city, the city recognized everyone who contributed.
